Hist. the system of currency deriving from New France and in use for many years in Lower Canada.
- 1938  . . . from 1796 onwards the dollar was equivalent to five shillings, Halifax (i.e. four dollars were equal to a pound Halifax), whilst five livres, French money, were equal to five shillings, Halifax, or one dollar. The sterling guinea was equivalent to one pound, three shillings and fourpence, Halifax, or twenty-eight livres, French currency.
